One of my happiest memories of spending time with Uncle Julius was on July 14, 2006. My brother, David Locke, who at the time was Sales Manager for the Herman Miller Office in Los Angeles, was hosting a reception at the Eames House in Pacific Palisades for the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). David was kind enough to offer me an invitation to attend, along with my wife Donna. I asked him if he would mind if I invited Julius Shulman to come as our guest, to which the quick reply came, “Of course, do you think you could arrange it?” I was on the phone a few minutes later with Uncle Julius who said he would be delighted to attend. We arrived on the Eames Meadow on a late afternoon in July; the staff were kind enough to allow me to drive my SUV right up on the meadow, to make the trip as short as possible for Julius, who was 95 at the time. Julius’ capable assistant Juergen Nogai, also accompanied us. As we began the short assent up the hill to the Meadow, we were greeted warmly by everyone. Julius was an instant hit; it seemed almost everyone wanted their picture taken with him, to which I was happy to oblige.

Uncle Julius is shown with Joan Marshall at the IIDA/Eames Foundation Reception sponsored by Herman Miller
