Architect Alfred B. Mullett designed the French Second Empire style State, War and Navy Building completed in 1888. The building was commissioned by President Ulysses S. Grant on the site of the original White House stables. It was for many years the world's largest building, with 566 rooms and approximately ten acres of floor space. It was generally regarded with disdain when completed; Mark Twain called it the "ugliest building in America while President Truman called it the "greatest monstrosity in America". During my college days at George Washington University in the mid-sixties, it was known as the Executive Office Building and is currently known as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building; it is occupied by the Executive Office of the President and Vice President.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971.

The Mission San Antonio de Valero was built by Spanish settlers on the banks of the San Antonio River around 1718. Named for St. Anthony of Padua, the mission housed Catholic missionaries and their converts until 1793, the year the government of Spain secularize the missions and distributed the land among the local residents.
The mission was occupied by a group of Texas volunteer soldiers during Texas' war of independence from Mexico in December of 1835. On February 23, 1836, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a force of thousands and began a blockade of the fort which lasted for thirteen days. The Alamo’s 200 defenders commanded by James Bowie and William Travis and frontiersman Davy Crockett were overwhelmed by vastly superior numbers ending the siege. The Battle of the Alamo became an enduring symbol of their heroic resistance.
