Sometime after I first moved to Los Feliz the first time, in 1992, I ran into one of my neighbors on the street who inquired (in a sweet British accent), "Have you been to Wales lately? She was referring to a wild, little-known section of Griffith Park. To get there, you have to go to the end of Cadman Drive just up the street and around the corner from the Mulholland Fountain. Look for an opening in the fence at the end of the road, and voila! You are there. It's even lovely on an late afternoon in mid-October; the generous tree canopy provides adequate shade from the sun. My friend German photographer snapped this photo while taking a hike together.

Local architect Howard Elwell designed the church in a modern postwar ecclesiastical style demonstrating the prominence of the congregation. The building is noted for its curved facade and amphitheater style auditorium with a fan-shaped accordion ceiling designed for acoustical superiority. In more recent years as church attendance declined the edifice was slated for demolition in 2015 to make way for a mixed-use development. A group named Save Residential Hollywood, Inc. nominated the church for historic-cultural monument in May 2015. The City's Cultural Heritage Commission voted to recommend designation during its meeting on September 17. On November 24, City Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee voted 2-0 in favor of designation.

The church was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Monument in May 2015. It is currently the home of Mosaic, a multi-site church, described as a "hipster megachurch", with a congregation composed mostly of "hip 20-somethings who work in the entertainment industry".

Architect Barbara Bestor has been making a splash in recent years in the architecture and design communities in and around Los Angeles: The multi-tasking mother of two is on a fast track, leaving her mark on seemingly everything she undertakes. Her work might be referred to as 'chic Bohemian', infusing practicality with high design.

Her recent book, 'BOHEMIAN MODERN: Living in Silver Lake' (Regan Books, 2006) reveals a great deal about her style: a trip down memory lane with a collection of stories about her local work and the friends she has met along the way.

Following in the footsteps of the great Modernist masters, Bestor selected a site directly across the street from the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Ennis House and two doors down the street from the Richard Neutra-designed Wirin House to build a new residence for herself and her two daughters. German Photographer Martin Schall (you-are-here.com) and I paid a visit in October 2008. The house is open and spacious on three levels, infused with bright colors and bathed in light. A private pool in the front courtyard is screened off from the massive wall of the Ennis House across the street.

The Barbara Bestor Residence is located at 2612 Glendower Avenue in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission.
