Architect Jo Paul Rognstad designed the Modernist style house and studio for painter and sculptor James Edward Grant and his wife Nancy nee Parkford Grant in 1952. James Grant was best know for his work in sculptural plastics, starting from abstract canvases, moving through collages and bas-reliefs until the work finally came off the wall in sculptural form.

In 1950 he accepted a teaching position at Pomona College in Claremont, California where he was Assistant Professor of Art for nine years. During his tenure at Pomona he worked with many influential artists and art historians, including painters Karl Benjamin (who lived immediately behind him in a house at 676 West 9th Street) and Frederick Hammersley, as well as Peter Selz (who later went on to become Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York) and Seymour Slive (Director of the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University).

Architects Mark Schoeman and Laurel Tucker dba The Tucker- Schoeman Venture are the current owners of the house. They added a Master Suite to the main house and expanded the studio. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark this past Sunday, August 25, 2019 who gave me a tour of the house and enlightened me on the local architectural scene.

The James Grant House and Studio is located at 676 West Ninth Street in Claremont, California. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.

Architect and artist Millard Sheets designed the Modernist style complex in 1953 for Millard Sheets designs, Inc., the design studio that employed up to thirty artists and architects during the heyday of his architectural practice. The complex included an office building and drafting room connected to a design studio, all "nestled in a courtyard-like garden surrounded by exotic plants and stone pathways," as described by the LA Conservancy's booklet on Sheets.

Located at 655 East Foothill Boulevard in Claremont, California. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.
