Visiting the Sowden House again and again is always a breathtaking experience from which one never tires. I first visited the house in 2005, as part of a "Volunteer Appreciation Event" sponsored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy Conference.

Designed by Lloyd Wright, the son of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1926-27, the Sowden House has been re-imagined by Designer Xorin Balbes (Temple Home) whose firm specialized in the restoration of old historic homes. The home has the look of an ancient temple which one may have just stumbled upon on a foray into a jungle. Temple Home's transformation is nothing short of magical, bringing a sensual vitality to this long-neglected landmark.

The 4-bedroom, 5-bath house in 5600 sq. ft. is currently (June 2016) on the market listed for sale for $4,795,000.

The Sowden House is located at 5121 Franklin Avenue in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. Declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2003 (No. 762)

Architect M.L. Barker designed the Spanish Colonial Revival style residence for Earl B. and Irene L. Wiggins in 1929. Mississippi transplant Wiggins manufactured automobile parts; they lived in the house with their five children. Merl Barker (1888-1970) was a principal in the architectural firm Barker & Ott. The firm also designed the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Beverly Hills (1930); the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church (Hollywood 1921); and the Spanish Gothic chapel at Mt. Saint Mary's College in Brentwood (1939).
