Until recently, I hadn’t been able to find out much about Architect Raúl Garduno but became more interested after “discovering” two hillside houses he designed in Silver Lake, the Fleming Drefeld House, which I initially photographed in January 2012, and more recently the house next door that he designed with Peter Heisler, which recently (June 2015) came on the market. From the owner of the Fleming Drefeld House I learned that the architect who began his university education studying engineering at Loyola Marymount University, later studied architecture at USC, graduating in the 1950s. He began his career in the office of Ragnar Qvale, leaving the firm to start his own practice. One thing is certain: he was not afraid to take on a challenging engineering project as the two aforementioned houses attest, both are built on steep hillside lots. He also designed the Franks House in 1966 (located at 1249 Tigertail Road in Brentwood). He married four times: to Barbara Jean Trembley (31 January 1959, divorced April 1966); Gretchen J. Gerke or Gere (8 August 1969, divorced October 1971); Hawley Griffith (6 December 1973, divorced October 1976 and Denise C. Rucker or Wood (married 25 August 1978).

“Raúl always had an interest in architecture,, according to an article written by Jeffrey Head for the Los Angeles Times on February 21, 2015, and attributed to his ex-wife, Barbara Jean Trembley. “After reading the 'Fountainhead' by Ayn Rand on the plane and identifying with its uncompromising lead character, he wanted to become an architect. After first blogging about Raúl, I received an email from Barbara Trembley with additional details, “Pete (Peter Heiser) was a school friend of mine, and fraternity brother to Raúl at USC; we were introduced at a jazz concert in the valley. We were married in January 1959- I was sixteen years old- he was twenty. To finance buying the Lucile Avenue lots, Pete sold his Corvette, a graduation gift from his grandmother. Pete was also responsible for promoting Raúl to John Entenza of Arts & Architecture which led to the publication of the first house designed by Raúl.”
