Storybook Style restaurant originally designed by Harry Oliver in 1922. The "Tam" or "Tam-O" as it is locally known is one of the oldest continuously-operated restaurants in Los Angeles, established by Walter Van de Kamp and Lawrence Frank, Founders of Van de Kamps Holland-Dutch Bakeries and the Lawry's restaurant chain. Harry Oliver was an Academy Award nominated art director who also designed some other notable homes including the famous Spadena “Witch House” in Beverly Hills as well as the iconic Van de Kamps Holland Dutch Bakery windmill.
The restaurant was a family favorite after my dad accepted a position with Van de Kamps in 1958 as Assistant Engineer. Over time, he was elevated to the position of Chief Engineer. It was not unusual to be invited to Van de Kamps for lunch with Dad who was often in the company of other VdK employees including his right-hand man, Assistant Engineers Clell Ramsey and E.L. "Fitz" Fitgerald.
Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan proclaimed the establishment a "Monumental Business" in 1997 in its 75th year of operation.
