Architectural Specialist Michael Locke has transformed a 'small stucco box' into a pleasing art deco statement, adding hammered copper, stained glass and glass block detailing. Collaborating with partner, Andy Jelmert and Ron Parks (formerly of Temple Home) the home has played a significant role in the revitalization of the immediate neighborhood.
Locke has been involved in the community since moving to the neighborhood in 2002. In 2003, he served on the Silver Lake Governing Board, founded the Silver Lake Beautification Committee the same year and was Vice Chair in 2004. Working with neighbors and leading by example, Occidental Boulevard has undergone dramatic improvement in the last five years. Argentine-born Architect Gustavo Gubel designed two imposing neo-Mayan 'pyramids' just up the street and San Francisco-based Architect Thomas Blanchard has designed a remodel of half a duplex on the same block (now under construction) amongst other transformations.
Landscape designer Rudy Zuzow transformed the terraced hillside lot into a sensory experience, adding gurgling fountains, cascading fragrant jasmine and statuary that artist James Etue described as 'It's a jungle up there!'
The home, located at 1308 N. Occidental Blvd. in Silver Lake, is on the market and listed for sale at $665,000 (April 2008).
