Architect Armand Monaco designed the Spanish Mediterranean Revival style house for men's clothing magnate John Joseph Haggarty in 1928. The commission was facilitated by the fact that Haggarty's daughter was engaged to one of Monaco's brothers, Dr. Salvatore Monaco, a Los Angeles physician. Haggarty, however preferred city life, spending most of his time at his West Adams mansion, the Castle York (also known as Haggarty Castle), allowing the beach house to fall into disrepair. The Palos Verdes estate eventually passed through several owners before being purchased in 1953 by the United States of Christ and becoming as it is known today as the Neighborhood Church.
