Architect William H. Harrison put his stamp on the City of Whittier, California, designing many of the prominent buildings in town, including El Ranch High School (1954-55), Lincoln School (c.1935); Lou Henry Hoover School (1938); and the buildings of the civic center, including City Hall (1955) and the Public Library (1959). Several of the buildings were designed in a PWA Moderne style; the Whittier Union High School, designed between 1939 and 1940 is a good example.

Classic PWA Moderne style, designed by Marsh, Smith & Powell in 1937. A walk around the campus reveals a cohesive design statement: concrete benches in the courtyard are set in a zig-zag pattern; even the hedges are trimmed the same way!

The school has a number of well-known alumni, including actor William Holden, actress Hilary Swank and politician Mary Bono Mack. The school is located at 1401 Fremont Avenue in South Pasadena.

The PWA Moderne style building has since 1994 been the home of the Carden Fire Sprinkler Co, however the art deco maiden superimposed over a "V" symbol above the front door suggests an earlier purpose. Thankfully Michael Carden, the current owner was able to shed some light on the building's history, albeit hearsay which has passed along from owner to owner. "The building was originally the Valley Creamery Company, which was an adjunct of Van de Kamps Holland-Dutch Bakery, located directly across the street. In those days, cows were still being milked on dairy farms as near as Glendale, and of course every bakery needs to have a source of fresh cream, Mr. Carden observed. The creamery was named for Mrs Valley Knudsen, wife of dairy king Thomas Knudsen who designed and built the facility. During the Depression, the facility was sold to an investment group, who in turn rented it to a series of tenants. For a time it was occupied as a distribution center for Dad's Root Beer until the company was sold to IC Industries in the 1970s. In the 1980s it was used by the Los Angeles Police Department as a facility for the department's North East Division until J.M. Carden purchased the site in 1994".
