Architect Rudolph M. Schindler designed the house for writer/composer Jose Rodriguez in 1941.The client's budget was substantial, allowing Schindler to use exotic materials including Santa Maria stone, green-flecked slate, clear Douglas fir, cypress, zinc and copper repoussée panels, built-in furniture, and extensive walls of glass. The home served as a glittering backdrop for cocktail parties for notable family friends including Igor Stravinsky, Salvador Dali, and Ansel Adams. The Rodriguez House was listed in the Glendale Register of Historic Resources (No. 24) in 1977. Located at 1845 Niodrara Drive in the Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood of Glendale, California. Peter Yates was a music critic for Arts & Architecture Magazine and wanted Schindler to 'create a studio space' for live performance of modern composers. Originally they planned to build a studio behind the house, however Shindler came up with the idea of putting the studio on top of the house to take advantage of the views.

The Yates Studio is located at 1735 Micheltorena Street in the Moreno Highlands of Silver Lake. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.

Schindler remodeled an existing house for Hyman Levin in 1925, adding more rooms as the family grew. The house was restored by Stephanos Polyzoides in 1984. Original landscaping designed by Richard Neutra has matured to the extent that the house is barely visible from the street. Located at 2673 Dundee Place in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. This photo was taken from Vista del Valle Drive on the trail to Cedar Grove surrounded by the landscape of Griffith Park.
