Shingle style mansion located at 201 E. Greystone Avenue in Monrovia, California, designed by Arthur B. Benton c.1894. Benton's architectural career in Los Angeles began shortly after his arrival in 1891. In 1893 he formed a partnership with William C. Aiken; together they designed a Shingle Style spec house in Angeleno Heights, located at 801 E. Kensington Road.which Benton opted to purchase, and which became his home for the rest of his life. In 1896, Benton bought out his partner’s interest in the firm and remained solo for the rest of his career. The same year, he joined a group of influential architectes to form the California Landmarks Club, organized for the purpose of restoring and preserving California's historic missions. Benton, along with Architects Charles Lummis and Sumner P. Hunt, were among the original founders of the organization. Arthur Benton served as the club’s secretary. He also supervised the restorations of both the San Juan Capistrano and San Diego Missions.

The Mission Revival Auditorium was designed and built for a specific purpose; John Steven McGroarty's "Mission Play" was presented here in over 3,000 performances between 1912 and 1933. Architect Arthur B. Benton designed the edifice to resemble the Mission de San Antonio Padua in the oak-studded valley of Polon, California.
Located at 428 South Mission Drive in the City of San Gabriel, California.

The main sanctuary (as seen from the chancel) of the expanded church, designed by Architect Arthur B. Benton in 1913. The stained glass window seen here of the Good Shepherd was designed by nearby Judson Studios. Brother Thomas Carey, Vicar of the church gave us an informative tour December 23, 2010.

The original chapel (barely visible on the left side, with a single gable)) was designed by Ernest Coxhead in 1888-89. The much larger addition was designed by Architect Arthur R. Benton in 1913. The stained glass Epiphany window over the main altar was designed by Tiffany; the other stained glass windows, include the Good Shepherd Window at the rear of the sanctuary were designed by Judson Studios.

The church played an important role in the struggle for Latino rights in the 1960's and 70's. Under the leadership of Fathers John Luce and Roger Wood, the church served as the home of "La Raza", the Chicano newspaper. The Chicano Moratorium was planned here, and the Brown Berets met at the church to plan their political activities. In 2005, the church was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument (No. 807) and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020..

The church is located at 2808 Altura Street in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.
