The church was originally the Glendale Church of Religous Science. After suffering financial setbacks, the church was given to the Self-Realization Fellowship. The group held its first service in the facility in November 2008. Completed in 1966, the church was designed by Howard Van Heuklyn of architectural firm Risley, Gould & Van Heuklyn, who was a practitioner of Religious Science himself.

The church has a conical roof supported by curved laminated wood beams; a massive stained-glass window covers most of the front of the sanctuary. A large cross serves as both structural support and decoration, standing at the center of the roof, dividing the stained-glass window and extending down to the concrete canopy sheltering the lower portion of the building. The style is reminiscent of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Compton, California, designed by Gerald Gladstone + Harold L. Williams in 1978. It also brings to mind the Cathedral of Brasilia by Architect Oscar Neimeyer.

The fellowship, founded in 1920 by Indian theologian Paramahansa Yogananda, draws from a combination of religious teachings, focusing on meditative components of yoga while referring primarily to Christian and Hindu scriptures to highlight its message.
