Architect Charles E. Shattuck designed the English Tudor style house for George H. and Helen F. Cutts in 1905. The house was later sold to Edmund H. Barmore, the president of the Los Angeles Transfer Company. The house was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument (No. 83) in 1971 as the Boyle-Barmore Residence. The house is one of the half dozen mansions on Alvarado Terrace, promoted by real estate developer Pomeroy Powers, the president of the Los Angeles City Council (1900-1904).
