Architect Thornton M. Abell designed the Modernist style house for Lester H. and Danita Wilcox House in 1948. The house is also known as Case Study House #7 and is unique in the series in that the house was designed specifically for the needs of its original owners, including a centralized activity room between the living room and kitchen as well as "a place to draw and work in the evening and a dark room for photography". The property was later subdivided and given a new address: 6238 North Deerfield Avenue in San Gabriel, California (not 643 North Deerfield Avenue, the address listed in most reference books)
