Architect Arthur B. Benton designed the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse in a Mission Revival style in 1927. The building was designed after the Mission San Antonio de Padua, specifically for the production of the Mission Play, first performed in 1912. The play is a three hour pageant romanticizing the mission era of Spanish California.
