The Revolutionary Monument in Lexington, Massachusetts was the first monument in the country to honor those who fought in the Revolutionary War. Erectedin 1799, the imposign monument bears the stirring inscription "Within the railing lie the remains of those who died in the first battle of the American Revolution, April 19, 1776". It was written by Rev. Jonas Clarke, the heroic person who sheltered John Hancock and Samuel Adams from the British.
