The Cathedral, located prominently on the east side of the Grand Plaza is the oldest in the New World. Construction began in 1562, using limestone from the dismantled Mayan temple which stood at the same spot. The building is striking in its simplicity, devoid of the ornamentation normally associated with colonial cathedrals. Pillaging during the Revolution of 1915 left the interior even more spare. A small side chapel is the home of the Cristo de las Ampollas (Christ of the Blisters). Legend claims the crucifix was carved from a tree located in the town of Ichmul. In 1645 the Ichmul church burned to the ground; only the statue survived though blistered.
