Architect Don Gibbs, FAIA designed the Mike and Arline Pyramid in 1994. a 4,000 seat arena on the campus of Long Beach State University. It is one of only three true pyramid-style buildings in the United States, the others being Luxor Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada and Pyramid Arena in Memphis, Tennessee. The Walter Pyramid is currently home to the Long Beach State 49ers men's basketball and Long Beach State 49ers women's basketball programs, as well as the Long Beach State 49ers men's volleyball and Long Beach State 49ers women's volleyball programs.

Don Gibbs joined his father architect Hugh Gibbs in 1960. As Gibbs & Gibbs, the firm designed many projects including Navy Regional Medical Center in San Diego; Long Beach Navy Hospital; the VA Biological Research Building in Long Beach; Walter Pyramid, Psychology Building, Music Complex, School of Dance and Theaters at California State University, Long Beach; various elementary, intermediate, and high schools; court houses, post offices, banks, and city halls of Long Beach and Downey.
