The Memorial Rotunda is reminiscent of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, designed by Bernard Maybeck in 1915 as the centerpiece of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. The open-domed temple was dedicated on December 17, 1953 to the "honored dead of American aviation on the 50th Anniversary of Powered Flight." The shrine was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 18, 1998.
