On holidays I usually try to find a few spare hours to explore the fascinating architecture of Los Angeles. I had seen a few photos of the Angeles Abbey online which whetted my appetite for a closer look. The architecture of the Middle East has always held a curious fascination with me having traveled extensively to Morocco, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The history of the Abbey is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Some sources claim was originally established in 1923 by a shipbuilder named George Clegg. The Long Beach native reportedly sent two architects to India for inspiration and, upon their return, had them build a 1,000-crypt mausoleum resembling the Taj Mahal. The Moorish-style structure features imported Italian marble, intricate tile work, and stained-glass windows and ceilings.
