Galway was our favorite town when we visited Ireland several years ago. The people were unbelievably friendly, inviting us to their homes in the wee hours of the mornng (the sun never quite sets in Galway, at least in June when we were there). Galway lies on the River Corrib between Lough Corrib and Galway Bay; it is the fourth most populous urban area in the Republic of Ireland and the sixth most populous city in the island of Ireland.
