Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Hollyhock House for Aline Barnsdall, a wealthy oil heiress and patron of the arts who wanted to establish a gathering place for artists. The house is named for the hollyhock, Aline's favorite flower; the plant appears throughout the house in geometric abstraction. During the construction of the house, the architect was away in Tokyo supervising the building of another of his projects, the Imperial Hotel. He left the supervision to one of his trusted apprentices, Rudolph M. Schindler, who stayed with the project through its completion.

The house has undergone a recent renovation and was open to the public for the first time today for a formal ribbon-cutting, February 13, 2015. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Council Member Mitch O'Farrell along with a host of dignitaries were on hand for the festivities.

The Hollyhock House is a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument (No.12) designated in 1963. Located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.
