I found this color tinted photo in a set off 12 postcards nicely preserved in a little folder and noted, "12 Postcards in colour from artistic photos published by Lehnert & Landrock, Cairo Series No 133." The company which was located on Kamel Street (between Shepheards and Continental) in Cairo offered a "big assortment of art plates of all sizes and in different finish from Egypt, Palestine, Algeria, and Italy." They even left their telephone number (#4323). Do you suppose they're still there?

The flooding of the Nile (Arabic: عيد وفاء النيل‎ "Festival of Fulfillment to the Nile") has been an important natural cycle in Egypt since ancient times. It is celebrated by Egyptians as an annual holiday for two weeks starting August 15, known as Wafaa El-Nil. It is also celebrated in the Coptic Church by ceremonially throwing a martyr's relic into the river, hence the name, Esba` al-shahīd ('The Martyr's Finger'). Ancient Egyptians believed that the Nile flooded every year because of Isis's tears of sorrow for her dead husband, Osiris. (text taken from Wikipedia)
