....Jutting out of one of the hilltops the cruiser Puglia makes a surreal sight. It was placed there, with its bow pointing in the direction of the Adriatic, “ready to conquer the Dalmatian shores”.
...... if you wish to be surprised,
you have to come here...
nothing may be compared to something you can imagine and your imagination will go far and far and more...
a ship imbedded in the hill over the lake...
we cannot imagine how it is possible...
it was the great eclectic imagination of a great Italian poet, Gabriele D'Annunzio, who lived here...
this ship was a gift to him and he had the idea to placed it watching at the lake, inside the park of his villa...
it is a great wonderful surprise, pure magic, pure imagination....

The Vittoriale degli italiani (English translation: The shrine of Italian victories) is a hillside estate in the town of Gardone Riviera overlooking the Garda lake in province of Brescia, Lombardy. It is where the Italian writer Gabriele d'Annunzio lived after his defenestration in 1922 until his death in 1938. The estate consists of the residence of d'Annunzio called the Prioria (priory), an amphitheatre, the protected cruiser Puglia set into a hillside, a boathouse containing the MAS vessel used by D'Annunzio in 1918 and a circular mausoleum. Its grounds are now part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani.

The house, Villa Cargnacco, had belonged to the German art historian of the Italian Renaissance Henry Thode from whom it was confiscated by the Italian state, including artworks, a collection of books, and a piano which had belonged to Liszt. d'Annunzio rented it in February 1921 and within a year reconstruction started under the guidance of architect Giancarlo Maroni. Due to d'Annunzio's popularity and his disagreement with the fascist government on several issues, such as the alliance with Nazi Germany, the fascists did what they could to please d'Annunzio in order to keep him away from political life in Rome. Part of their strategy was to make huge funds available to expand the property, to construct and/or modify buildings, and to create the impressive art and literature collection. In 1924 the airplane that d'Annunzio used for his pamphleteering run over Vienna during World War I was brought to the estate, followed in 1925 by the MAS naval vessel used by him to taunt the Austrians in 1918 in the Beffa di Buccari. In the same year the protected cruiser Puglia was hauled up the hill and placed in the woods behind the house, and the property was expanded by acquisition of surrounding lands and buildings.

In 1926 the government donated an amount of 10 million lire, which allowed a considerable enlargement of the Villa, with a new wing named the Schifamondo. In 1931 construction was started on the Parlaggio, the name for the amphitheatre. The mausoleum was designed after d'Annunzio's death but not actually built until 1955, and d'Annunzio's remains were finally brought there in 1963.

Milan Central or Milano Centrale
is the main railway station of the city of Milan, Italy and one of the main railway stations in Europe. The station is a terminus and located at the northern end of central Milan. It was officially inaugurated in 1931 to replace the old central station (built 1864), which was a transit station but with a limited number of tracks and space, so could not handle the increased traffic caused by the opening of the Simplon tunnel in 1906.

Milano Centrale has high speed connections to Turin in the west, Venice via Verona in the east and on the north-south mainline to Bologna, Rome, Naples and Salerno. The Simplon and Gotthard railway lines connect Milano Centrale to Bern via Domodossola and Zürich via Chiasso in Switzerland.

Destinations of inter-city and regional railways radiate from Milano Centrale to Ventimiglia (border of France), Genova, Turin, Domodossola (border of Swiss Canton of Valais/Wallis), Tirano (border of Swiss Canton of Graubünden/Grisons), Bergamo, Verona, Mantova, Bologna and La Spezia.

The Milan suburban railway service, however, does not use Milano Centrale but the other mainline stations: Porta Garibaldi (northwest), Cadorna (west) and Rogoredo (east).

Beauty and Serenity in Tyrol (Austria)

Only 3 km in the south east of Lienz (Austria), there is Tristach, located at the foot of the majestic mountains of the Lienz Dolomites. The emblem of the village, which has already been inhabited in Bronze Age, depicts a lion with scythe on red background. No, there have never been lions in the area… but the emblem is the one of the Lords of Erenberg, who have owned a castle in this area.

Those who seek relaxation and recreation are at the right place! Various hiking and walking paths are ready to be explored. One of the most popular hiking paths is the historic path, starting at the “Tristacher Tratte” where there is a wayside shrine, which has been built in 1636 AD as plague column. Right next to this column you can see a majestic linden tree that has been planted in 1879 AD on the occasion of the wedding of the Emperor Franz Josef I and the Empress Elizabeth. Would you like to explore the mountains, but you are not courageous enough? The alpine school takes remedial actions and shows you the mountains in summer in all their glory.

Winter in Tristach stands for skiing, ice skating and sledding. The skiing area Lienzer Bergbahnen includes the two skiing areas Zettersfeld and Hochstein, offering 37 km of ski slopes and 12 lift facilities. Lake Tristach, however, transforms in winter into one huge ice rink. But better to ask first if the sheet of ice is thick enough! Another highlight is the natural toboggan run Dolomites, which features a lenght of about 7.5 km. And in case one year there should be no snow, this run in covered by artifical snow.
