Beauty and Serenity in Val Fiscalina (South Tirol - Trentino AltoAdige Region - Italy)

The lake of Anterselva
is situated in Valle Anterselva, which diverts from the Val Pusteria near Valdaora. This lake, which is the third lake in South Tyrol regarding dimensions, is surrounded by great mountain scenery as well as the glaciers of the nature park Vedrette di Ries-Aurnia, perfect for extended hikes.

Those who prefer pleasant walks will enjoy a path leading round the lake, which in 2003 has been transformed into a nature trail. Along this trail you might get to know several curiosities about the lake as well as nature in general. You might for instance come across the myth of the origin of Lake Anterselva:
Once upon a time there were three prosperous farms in this area. When one day a beggar came to ask for charity and the farmers refused, the beggar foretold that there would come up three fountains, destroying the farms. The farmers laughted at him, but some days later this prediction came true… and this was the rise of Lago di Anterselva…

However, walking round the lake is great fun, as numerous games are waiting both for adults and children. Moreover you will come across information panels which affirm that also in this area there are flesh-eating plants… :-)

Not far from the lakeshore, there is also the biathlon centre, venue for world championships as well as numerous international competitions, as well as a cross-country ski centre. When the lake is frozen in winter you can enjoy ice skating surrounded by a fairytale-like winter landscape. In summer, however, the lake is a perfect setting for mountain bike tours, for example the popular “Klammlrunde”.

Altitude: 1,642 m asl
Surface: 44 hectares
Maximum depth: 38 m
Average depth: 25,5 m
Shoreline: 2.7 km
Category: Mountain lake

Driving through the beautiful Valle Anterselva and passing the biathlon centre, we finally arrive at a parking space near the Tiroler Hütte, where we leave our car. We start our walking tour at the first information panel and decide to circle the lake clockwise. This nature path was opened in 2003 and informs very clearly about the flora and fauna of the region surrounding Lake Anterselva. We learn a lot about the forces of nature, the most important rocks and trees - this is a very interesting round tour both for children and adults.

At the beginning, the path leads along the lake shores. We walk on a very nice wooden pier over the water, watching some swans and the reflection of many yellow larches and the snow-capped Vedrette di Ries mountains in the lake. Soon the path leads us on several steps into the forest, where we can admire the emerald green lake from an other perspective. At the east end of Lake Anterselva we reach a restaurant with a big playing meadow and playing ground, where we decide to have a short rest.

After a nice cup of coffee we continue our tour, crossing the road to Passo Stalle and walking through the forest above the lake in the direction of our starting point, enjoying very beautiful views of Lake Anterselva. Unfortunately, some clouds block the view of the splendid Mount Collalto.

On several stations along the nature path not only children can learn a lot: What happens to nature when an avalanche occurs? Which fir cone belongs to which tree? Which fish are living in Lake Anterselva? What are the functions of a treetop? At Lake Anterselva you will get the right answers!

Please note: This is a very popular walking tour, especially on summer weekends, since the lake lies at 1,600 metres asl and provides some refreshment on hot days. However, we particularly consider this tour in autumn, when the golden trees and snow-capped mountain peaks reflect in the lake.

Beauty and Serenity in Tyrol (Austria)

Only 3 km in the south east of Lienz (Austria), there is Tristach, located at the foot of the majestic mountains of the Lienz Dolomites. The emblem of the village, which has already been inhabited in Bronze Age, depicts a lion with scythe on red background. No, there have never been lions in the area… but the emblem is the one of the Lords of Erenberg, who have owned a castle in this area.

Those who seek relaxation and recreation are at the right place! Various hiking and walking paths are ready to be explored. One of the most popular hiking paths is the historic path, starting at the “Tristacher Tratte” where there is a wayside shrine, which has been built in 1636 AD as plague column. Right next to this column you can see a majestic linden tree that has been planted in 1879 AD on the occasion of the wedding of the Emperor Franz Josef I and the Empress Elizabeth. Would you like to explore the mountains, but you are not courageous enough? The alpine school takes remedial actions and shows you the mountains in summer in all their glory.

Winter in Tristach stands for skiing, ice skating and sledding. The skiing area Lienzer Bergbahnen includes the two skiing areas Zettersfeld and Hochstein, offering 37 km of ski slopes and 12 lift facilities. Lake Tristach, however, transforms in winter into one huge ice rink. But better to ask first if the sheet of ice is thick enough! Another highlight is the natural toboggan run Dolomites, which features a lenght of about 7.5 km. And in case one year there should be no snow, this run in covered by artifical snow.
