"... as he swam on, anxious to plant his feet on solid ground again. But just offshore, as far as a man's shout can carry, he caught the boom of a heavy surf on jagged reefs - roaring breakers crashing down on an ironbound coast, exploding in fury- the whole sea shrouded- sheet of spray - no harbor to hold ships, no roadstead where they'd ride, nothing but jutting headland, riptooth reefs, cliffs."

Homer, Odyssey, translation Robert Fagles

View from the jetty at the mouth of the river Douro in Porto on a wet and windy night. I was quite impressed the absence of tripod, the few glasses I had had for dinner and the wind wouldn't beat image stabilization over a half second. There are some smart engineers out there! And thank you Maggie for convincing me it was worth walking up that jetty.

" 'Papa dear, could you manage to let me have a good big waggon? I want to take all our dirty clothes to the river and wash them. You are the chief man here, so it is only right that you should have a clean shirt when you attend meetings of the council. Moreover, you have five sons at home, two of them married, while the other three are good looking bachelors; you know they always like to have clean linen when they go to a dance, and I have been thinking about all this.
She did not say a word about her own wedding, for she did not like to, but her father knew and said, 'You shall have the mules, my love, and whatever else you have a mind for. Be off with you, and the men shall get you a good strong waggon with a body to it that will hold all your clothes.' "

Homer, Odyssey, Translation Samuel Butler

I am Odysseus, son of Laertes, known to the world for every kind of craft - my fame has reached the skies. Sunny Ithaca is my home. Atop of her stands our seamark, mount Neriton's leafy ridges shimmering in the wind. Around her a ring of islands circle side-by-side, Dulichion, Same, wooded Zacynthus too, but mine lies low and away, the farthest out to sea, rearing into the western dusk while the others face the east and breaking day. Mine is a rugged land but good for raising sons - and I myself, I know no sweeter sight on earth than a man's own native country.

Homer, Odyssey, IX, Tr. Robert Fagles

"We stayed with Circe for a whole twelvemonth feasting upon an untold quantity both of meat and wine. But when the year had passed in the waning of moons and the long days had come round, my men called me apart and said, 'Sir, it is time you began to think about going home, if so be you are to be spared to see your house and native country at all.' "

Homer, Odyssey, X, Tr. Samuel Butler

I used the rear lens of my Minadax wide angle converter for this one. Today felt like the first day of spring.

"Yea and I should have seen the men of old, whom I was fain to look on, Theseus and Peirithous, renowned children of the gods. But ere that might be the myriad tribes of the dead thronged up together with wondrous clamour: and pale fear gat hold of me, lest the high goddess Persephone should send me the head of the Gorgon, that dread monster, from out of Hades." (Odyssey, Book XI, translation S.H. Butler & A. Lang
