Built in the XIII th century. That worrisome crack appeared when modifications were made in the XVII th century. Apparently authorities have started coming up with measures to address the issue (www.ville-semur-en-auxois.fr/La-Tour-de-l-Orle-d-Or-sous-...) But what on earth is an "Orle d'or?" Quoting the Dictionaire de l'académie française:

ORLE n. m. XIIe siècle, urle. Déverbal d'orler, forme ancienne d'ourler.
1. ARCHIT. Rebord ou filet placé sous l'ove d'un chapiteau.
2. HÉRALD. Pièce honorable semblable à la bordure, mais située à l'intérieur de l'écu, dont elle ne touche pas les bords. Porter de sable à orle d'or, huit tours en orle.

So either the trim under the capital of a column, or, in heraldry, a trim that does not touch the edge of the shield. How the tower came to that name I do not know.
