There is no knob on its bill, so this is the mom, but the dad's do occasionally aid in incubation, unlike most waterfowl. The male Mute Swan selects the nest site and initially builds a platform. He then gathers nesting material which the female uses to finish the nest, molding it to her body shape.
After a dry winter, we're finally getting some rain in the Spring, thinking of this poor exposed bird on its nest as it pours.

Straight out the shower and out the door, forgot to check the mirror, forgot to brush its hair. Life is full of egrets!
It's starting to show its nuptial plumage at the tail and on its back, the wispy feathers which the French called aigrettes. This is where the name egret came from, mispronunciation of aigrette, otherwise, we'd just call them herons, which of course they are. Once the height of fashion, aigrette harvesting almost drove this beautiful bird to extinction.
Its also starting to turn green around the eyes, another sign that breeding season is almost here.

Another red-eared slider turtle in just a few days. The rain must have them out and about a little more. Doesn't seem to be very nice water.
