I had just gone down to feed the fish and was back at the den window. I think he saw me and decided to do some fishing himself.
I used a Sigma 1.4x teleconverter with a Nikon 500mm prime lens hand held. I have had the lens a couple of months and the idea just occurred to me today. It worked great. It will not work with my 300mm prime Nikon lens. I bought the teleconverter a few years ago for a Sigma Sports lens that is very heavy for me to use. I like my 150 to 600 mm Sigma but it is a monster to hold with the D850. I like being able to adjust the length, but the prime lens are so much easier to hold. I miss a lot of shots with the prime because I can't adjust the length.

Best enlarged. You can see water droplets on his head and neck area and his muddy neck from dunking his head to the lake bottom to eat the fungus/slime on the bottom. He was a first time visitor and this was photographed near my dock area.

He was feeding from a dead tree over the water. I am not sure what that greenery is at his feet, maybe some kind of algae. We had a lot of local flooding during the rain and snow so the water probably came up this high and deposited the greenery. We were able to actually get out and take a walk at a local park during a warm winter day this week. I had a long prime lens and to get him totally in the shot from the path, I had to turn it sideways because he was really close to me and unafraid.

This was taken at the edge of the lake near my dock where my yard meets the lake. It was taken two summers ago, the lake had been down for 7 years to repair dam and had just came back in. I love the dark color of the water in this shot. It looks more like swamp water than lake water at that point. It is back to normal color now. It was so beautiful with all the green grass and weeds showing under the water and the dark color due to all the decaying vegetation. I'm glad I took pics that summer to remember how it looked. You can kind of see the grass under the water too in this shot. The dark water made a great reflective mirror for the blue heron.
