The Royal Mile (Scots: Ryal Mile) is the name given to a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The name was first used in W M Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook, published in 1920.
The thoroughfare, as the name suggests, is approximately one Scots mile long and runs downhill between two significant locations in the history of Scotland, namely Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. The streets which make up the Royal Mile are (west to east) Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, the Canongate and Abbey Strand. The Royal Mile is the busiest tourist street in the Old Town, rivalled only by Princes Street in the New Town.
Retreating ice sheets, many millennia ago, deposited their glacial debris behind the hard volcanic plug of the castle rock on which Edinburgh Castle stands, resulting in a distinctive crag and tail formation. Running eastwards from the crag (i.e. the castle rock), the Royal Mile sits upon the ridge of the tail which slopes gently down to Holyrood Palace. Steep closes (or alleyways) run between the many tall lands (or tenement buildings) off the main thoroughfare. The route runs from an elevation of 42 meters above sea level at the palace, to 109 meters at the castle, for an average gradient of 4.1%.
Today, the Royal Mile is an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, pubs and visitor attractions. During the annual Edinburgh Festival, the High Street becomes crowded with tourists, entertainers and buskers.

La Royal Mile es el nombre que recibe la avenida que comunica el Castillo de Edimburgo con el palacio Holyroodhouse y que se sitúa en pleno corazón del casco antiguo de Edimburgo. En el recorrido de la Royal Mile, de 1,8 km de largo o una milla escocesa (que es lo que mide la Royal Mile), destacan cuatro zonas o distritos: Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street y Canongate. La Royal Mile es la principal atracción de la ciudad antigua (Old Town) edimburguesa y rivaliza con Princes Street, en la Ciudad Nueva (New Town).
El primer tramo es Castlehill, el que parte del castillo e incluye sus alrededores. Destacan edificios como The Hub (torre en forma de aguja).
El siguiente tramo es Lawnmarket, o la zona del mercado del lino. Actualmente la calle está orientada al turismo, con multitud de tiendas y souvenirs. En dicha calle se encuentra Gladstone's Land, un bloque de viviendas del siglo XVII, aunque edificado en 1550 y rescatado en 1934 por National Trust for Scotland, cuando el edificio se encontraba en vías de demolición. En la actualidad, dicho organismo es el propietario del edificio. Al final de la calle se encuentra la intersección con George IV Bridge, una calle elevada, a la derecha (orientación sur) y a la izquierda con Bank Street, en dirección a The Mound (la colina artificial de Edimburgo). En Bank Street destaca las oficinas centrales del Bank of Scotland, de estilo barroco.
En High Street, el tercer tramo de la Royal Mile, se encuentran varios símbolos de la ciudad. Probablemente sean los más destacados la catedral de San Giles, cuya edificación data de hace más de nueve siglos, y el corazón de Midlothian. Este último es un mosaico en forma de corazón realizado en el empedrado exterior de la catedral y pretende recordar donde se situó la antigua prisión de Edimburgo en el siglo XV y demolida en 1817.
Canongate (y Abbey Strand) conduce finalmente al Palacio Real de Holyroodhouse y su abadía en ruinas.
