… those belong to a Messerschmitt Bf110G-4/R6 of Erste Staffel, NachtJagdGeschwader Drei based in Grove, Denmark. They are the aerials of its Liechtenstein Fu220b SN-2 radar set, which turned this former twin engine daytime flying coffin into a lethal night prowler.
I/NJG3 was posted to the night defence of Northern Germany in 1945, whose skies were abused by Bomber Command almost on a nightly basis at the time. This aircraft was surrendered to British forces at the end of the war, and had a distinguished late career as a flying museum piece. It retired to the Bomber Hall of RAF Museum Hendon in 2016.

After campaigning in Britain against the Caledonian tribes for unclear reasons, he died in York, reportedly leaving this telling last piece of advice to his sons: “Be harmonious, enrich the soldiers, scorn all others”.

By 1945, ML824 was flying long anti submarine patrols over the Atlantic with No. 201 Squadron out of RAF Castle Archdale, Northern Ireland. It was transferred to the French Navy post war, flew privately after that and ended up in the RAF Museum collection in the early seventies.
