Hard to believe I've been leading trips to Arizona for twelve years now. This is a shot from one of my early trips that I've never edited before.

It was June of 8 years ago when I, as a newly re-born birder after a 25-year absence from the pursuit/passion/hobby, saw my first Wilson’s Warbler. I recall being spellbound by this new ‘lifer’, not knowing what species it was, but knowing it wasn’t one I’d seen before and afterwards rushing back to my campsite to excitedly rifle through my (then mint) copy of John Acorn & Chris Fisher’s ‘Birds of Alberta’ to identify the mystery bird! Years later and also many birds later, I am happy to report that seeing this ‘Willy’ singing his heart out on a cool, breezy morning this past weekend left me no less thrilled than I was on that very first encounter almost a decade ago 😊.

Took me a good 2 hours of quietly walking through the park woods following a flock of foraging warblers to get this image. Branches & leaves (mostly), poor light, dog walkers, and the general skittishness of these Blackpolls all conspired to frustrate my attempts to get a clear shot. Continually losing the flock, I would have to re-find them by ear and I was fortunate that the males were constantly calling, although it is a very subtle song and I had to really concentrate to hear them beneath all the other singing birds in the woods. Ultimately I came away with only a couple of images that I was happy with, but knowing I only had a short window of days to see these migrating birds locally I felt the reward was worth the tiring effort put in :)
