This reed-loving bird is found throughout the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North Africa. Although known also as a bearded tit, it is not a tit as such but appears to belongs to its own unique group. In the way they move about the reeds however, they resemble long-tailed tits.

This one is the male of the species. As you can see it has more of a moustache rather than a beard. It is this feature which is lacking in the female.

Most of the year they feed on small reed aphids and other smaller insects, but come autumn and winter they switch to reed seeds.
