Deep in a parcel of Weyerhaeuser land in southwest Washington is this thunderous waterfall. Getting here requires purchasing an overpriced permit and trudging 5 miles up a logging road, then scrambling down a steep slope. The trees have been preserved immediately around the creek bed; imagine what it must have been like to walk through miles of old growth to get here.

And now for something a bit different!

When the wind really howls, this particular spot tends to get some pretty crazy wave action. The shoreline seems to funnel waves into each other so they crash, making these incredible exploding waves. While the water looks rough, out of nowhere you’ll see an explosion of water and sand headed straight up, only to be caught by the wind, and blown away like it was never there. It’s really shocking to see up close, and it was real, real windy when I was there a few months back. Gusts over 100kmph!

But what makes it extra interesting to me, is that sometimes the waves and wind almost seem to form faces, or animals, or creatures of some sort. Going through the series of images after shooting is very much like looking at ink blots - maybe what I see in the wave says something about what’s going on in my head!

Here's one of the waves that really caught my attention
