There is a shallow marshy area off of Horsepen Bayou that I have glimpsed for years but only this year have I been able to paddle into the entrance. Apparently the topography is changing because last week I was able to paddle all the way to its farthest reaches and the tide was not even all that high. The combination of shallow water, low plants, and protected open space makes it ideal habitat for a variety of ducks and I saw no less than 15 on this day, including a raft of 10 Blue-winged Teal.
