Met Finch through my friend Jon, which definitely makes a difference.

I'm not going in cold, basically, I've got Jon giving Finch the lowdown on me, letting her know I'm a stand up guy.

Which is something that usually takes a few minutes, at least. I think the assumption (and a fair assumption to make, looking at the photography landscape these days) is that most male photographers are some shade of creep.

A good portion of any of my shoots is spent counteracting that assumption, assuring my subjects that, while I may be a nutter and a weirdo, I am not a creep. My intentions are exactly what I presented them to be.

Which I don't necessarily look at as a problem. It means I get to show a person something of myself, breaks the ice, gives them a better sense of what I'm after and where my head's at.

GET TO KNOW ME, for those of you old enough to remember Jon Lovitz.

I show 'em who I am. If they don't run screaming, then we've got ourselves a shoot.

No one's run screaming. Yet.

I'm bad news for a young photographer wants to hang out, it's all "when I was young" this and "if I'd started at your age" that.

Probably why teaching workshops suits me so well. I love talking about...pontificating about photography. Dunno what started it, I wasn't always this way, someone gets me started, I'll go on forever.

Happened while shooting Lisa, happened the week before when a co-worker asked me about my project.

I'm working on talking less. Arguing less. Giving other people more space in a conversation, trying to figure out when to prioritize, see if it's really Necessary to be arguing about something.

Bit of a challenge. It's...there's room for growth. But it pays off when I see something I wouldn't have ordinarily, hear something I probably would've talked over, when I notice I'm calm instead of all fired up over some bit of nothing.

Figured I've been working for awhile now at being a better photographer, I should probably put some work in being a better human.

It was more about thinking than shooting. I'd come to Carré's apartment with Laura, and whenever it was Laura's turn to shoot, I'd just wander around, looking for spaces to use.

When it was my turn, I'd experiment. I've shot Carré numerous times, know, if I want, we can take a gorgeous shot of her. Not so interested in that. Want to play around, see what I can do differently, maybe figure out new stuff. Shoot in near darkness, shoot sitting on the floor far back from her, use the new camera and an old camera with new film, see how that plays out.

No pressure, did as much talking as shooting, figured out a few things. You just take it easy, everything tends to work out.
