Guess what arrived today?

No, not Emily. Wait. Yes. Emily arrived at my apartment, today. We walked around the neighborhood, went farther up into the hills than ever before. Helluva dame, Emily. Damn good time, we had.

BUT THEN, got back to the apartment, and there’s a little box waiting at my door.

Just happens to be full of new (NEW, is there a way to make text blink on here? Imagine that NEW is blinking, that’s how excited I am) Polaroid film.

NEW black & white & super delicate Polaroid film, from The Impossible Project.

So delicate (COUGH COUGH UNSTABLE COUGH), it’s got instructions on how to handle it, soon as it pops out.

This was the second shot, it’s definitely strange, and I swear some of those dark blacks are undeveloped?

BUT IT’S STILL AWESOME. Yes, all the more often for being completely unpredictable.

Because it works. Works just fine. Ain’t perfect, but that’ll come in time, I’m sure.

Right now? POLAROID FILM. NEW. WORKS JUST FINE. EMILY WAS ALSO AWESOME. JUST A HAIR LESS AWESOME THAN NEW POLAROID FILM, TO PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE.

AND YES, THIS IS ME YELLING BECAUSE I’M EXCITED!!!!

The new Polaroid film is...it's like my first college girlfriend. Strange, new, oddly compelling, unpredictable.

AND HIGHLY UNSTABLE.

My experience with the first pack was at times exciting, frustrating, enraging.

But, having figured out Why it acts the way it does, that it's incredibly sensitive to any and all external forces except sound (I think), I'm now determined to master it. To break it like a young stallion, make it my bitch.

The next pack I use, I'm gonna take all the shots indoors, see if keeping it out of the sun's POWERFUL RAYS makes any difference.

Vampire film, that's really what this is. But I dig vampires, so we'll see.

A year older, a year wiser, another opportunity to get completely shit-faced in the name of celebrating her birth.

Birthdays are the only real holiday I believe in. So go to her Flickr, wish her a good one.

Good timing, really.

Teresa and I had been planning a shoot for an age, weathered cancellations on each side, finally met up at the base of my favorite Griffith Park mountain.

And I just happened to have had several packs of Impossible Project film, sent to me that I could take some shots for their NY exhibition.

Right after "hey, glad to meet you, thanks for agreeing to climb up this wicked steep hill to have your picture taken by some (admittedly) awesome dude you've never met" I made sure to tell her this would be tricky.

Tricky because Impossible Project film is tricky. Remarkably better than the first batch to come from their factory...what, in January?

But still tricky. Still unpredictable. Still temperamental.

Thing of it was, we had ourselves a blast trying to figure it all out, figure out the new new film they'd sent, film I had no experience with, film with its own specific and vexing properties.

Frustrating as it was, it was also more than a little exciting, that sense of discovery mingled with success punctuating failure.

Pulling off a good Polaroid shot...I got that. Been at it a long time.

Pulling off a good Impossible Project shot...that there is something to feel proud of. Fighting the film to make

it

do

what

I

want.

Winning feels good.
