What better picture to post on a sunday? I have to say, if you haven't been, it is essential you go to either a baptist church or a sunday House of Blues brunch. Nobody puts music, food and Baby Jesus together better than black folk, I tell you what.
Normally, I'm not a huge fan of Gospel Music, you'll never see me at the local record store picking up the hot new Gospel album, but damn, seeing it live is a whole other ball of wax.
And the thing about Gospel is, even though, yeah, it's about God, and me and God broke up a long time ago, when my sister tells me she likes listening to Gospel, I don't shake my head, or try to get her to return it for a Beatles album, or the new TV on the Radio disc. Because Gospel? Harmless. Better than her listening to hoodrat bootie rap, wearing revealing hoochie clothes at 14, getting pregnant and ending up working two jobs and wondering why her baby daddy ain't called.

Way Way Back Machine Weekend. In 1997, I decided it would be a great idea to have a New Year's Eve party. What was conceived as a raging hoe down ended up a strange affair, where people huddled around a small tv set watching the countdown, people who didn't know each other got the opportunity to have stilted and awkward conversations with each other, and one of the guests decided it would be a good idea to get a haircut. In my bathroom. This is what happens when you have a party without alcohol. Here, Jennifer watches as the haircut takes place. She was my friend's college roommate, barely five foot two, a clean-cut giggly little thing. She was part of the crew through coincidence more than anything else, if she hadn't been our friend's roommate, we never would've met her, let alone hung out with her. Nothing wrong with the girl, just different tastes, different sensibilities. But that was college, and slightly post-college. You were thrown together with a bunch of people, and slowly but surely you formed a group of friends from all the available folks. Eventually, the odd ends fall away. I think she's a veterinarian now.

This is when I first discovered a magical side-effect of the camera. Under the right conditions(booze, late night, sexiness), suggesting that two people kiss for the camera ACTUALLY CAUSES THEM TO DO IT. ah, but such a slippery slope this becomes, both for the photographer and other potential subjects. Next thing you know it's five years later and you're asking someone to "just snort the blow a little slower, but don't let it fall off the girl's bum, but do hold the riding crop tighter".

Of course, I had no transvestites, superfreaks, or glam stars at my disposal, and had to make do with a bed of pretty flowers.
