Pulp and I had this little tradition, we'd shoot at the end of every year...which worked great until the pandemic, so, 2019 was the last time (so far) we pulled this off.
Got a different feel from her, this shoot, softer, more at ease. Maybe it's the lighting (cheap Chinese LED stands, if you're wondering), maybe it's that we'd been shooting for a few years, at this point.
Time can become its own tool for rapport, is what I've discovered. Shoot people enough times, over enough time, familiarity sets in. Comfort.
And then you can experiment, with light, with composition, with the relationship you've created with your subject. I felt able to play around with the lights, Pulp knew I wasn't going to waste her time, or leave her empty-handed, photo-wise. It's not just about putting the subject at ease, it's about creating an environment where I'm willing to challenge myself, an environment where I can see avenues for enjoyment.
Told some friends over the weekend, my main goal, every minute of the day: Avoid Boredom. True for shoots, as well!
