The Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), Taken on 20 January 2012, AT 10:51:01 AM, just 1 second after the image DSC_2354 posted earlier.
This particular broken stem of the giant grass Arundo donax provides a convenient lookout perch for any birds tempted by the bird feeder hanging very near, so I focus on it and wait! This time I was rewarded by this beautiful and agile bird. Jerky, abrupt movements - very alert and wary, frequently twisting its head and body around, checking for any signs of danger. This image and the one at www.flickr.com/photos/lorre_01/6729617797/in/photostream/ were taken just one second apart and the change in position indicates the speed of the bird's movements.
Camera: Nikon D300. Photo taken 20 January 2012, 10:51 am, in Oradour Fanais, in the Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France.
INFORMATION (found on internet): Nuthatches are omnivorous, eating mostly insects, nuts and seeds. They forage for insects hidden in or under bark by climbing along tree trunks and branches, sometimes upside-down. Their habit of wedging a large food item in a crevice and then hacking at it with their strong bills gives this group its English name. (More information at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuthatch)
