Returning to Medan after a vacation in England we broke our journey in India spending time in Bombay & New Delhi. A visit to the station in Bombay was essential. Nice to see the red and white double-decker buses and the indian built version of the Morris Cowley.

The fabulous Gothic style station was built as the headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honour of the Queen and Empress Victoria; it was opened on the date of her Golden Jubilee in 1887.

Since 1996 the station has been known in India as Chatrapati Shivaji, after a famed 17th century Maratha king. Bombay is known as Mumbai these days.

Indian Railways broad gauge Pacific WP 7656, built 1965 at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works West Bengal, & train stopped at Ajhai en route from Delhi to Agra Cantt with the Taj Express.

We waited 9-10 minutes here for the Toofan (?) Express to pass pulled by a diesel. Departing at 09.08 we arrived at the main intermediate stop at Mathura at 09.34.

Our return journey two days later was on the same train pulled by the same WP.

Preserved at the Indian Railway Museum. Built by Beyer Peacock in Manchester in 1930 & classed as N (number 815), they were the only Beyer-Garratts in India with the 4-8-0+0-8-4 configuration. Weighing 235 tons, these 4-cylinder articulated broad-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul heavy mineral & iron ore traffic on the Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) & later on the South Eastern Railway.
