The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the Eurasian kingfisher and river kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptations to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.

Kothduwa temple
The grizzled giant squirrel (Ratufa macroura) is a large tree squirrel in the genus Ratufa found in the highlands of the Central and Uva provinces of Sri Lanka, and in patches of riparian forest along the Kaveri River and in the hill forests of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala states of southern India. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as near threatened due to habitat loss and hunting.
The monk that was taking care of the temple got these squirrels to eat out of his hand. They were obviously used to do this. and practically tame, although living freely in the wild.
This gave us the opportunity to take a lot of close ups of this cute critter.

Nilwala River Safari is the best place to travel in Madu River in Balapitiya. The 'Madu Ganga' which enters the sea at Balapitiya is one of the last remaining tracts of pure mangrove forests in srilanka. The historic and famous buddhist temple"Kothduwa" is situated on one of the isolated island in this river. Nilwala River Safari is the best place to have a wonderful tour in Madu River.
