Ah! well a-day! what evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross,
the Albatross
About my neck was hung.

Anselm Kiefer uses different materials to shape his images. Buckets full of acrylic with gritty dirt that roughens the paint. Sticks, stalks, plaster and gold to suggest corn stalks. Real objects such as a scythe. All this creates an almost tangible atmosphere.
Can we still call this a painting? Yes and no. Kiefer evokes an illusory landscape and although the object has highly sculptural features, it hangs on the wall like a classic window painting.
The suggestion of a lush cornfield is deceptively beautiful. Wild movements make it clear that wheat is being harvested here, at this very moment. There is a dance going on between life and death. We are in danger.
The scythe is a paradoxical symbol. It helps us with our daily bread but is also the attribute of the Grim Reaper.
