Most of the times when I drive up to the Colorado Plateau I have to pass the little town of Shiprock. It’s name derives from the ancient remains of a gigantic volcano plug called Shiprock. A stop here is always obligatory for me. It is like paying a tribute to the people who live in the four corners area and call it Tsé Bitʼaʼí ("rock with wings" or "winged rock). Shiprock plays a significant role in Navajo religion, mythology and tradition.
How to get there?

Sue is the most famous Tyrannosaurus rex as it is the most extensive and best preserved specimen ever found. There was only one major bone missing. It was the hip bone and I found it at my last visit to the Bisti Badlands, New Mexico.
Just kidding! Sue was actually discovered at the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in western South Dakota near the city of Faith. Its skeleton can be seen now at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. BUT, I have to say that walking around in Bisti, New Mexico will give some interesting parallels.

An annular solar eclipse photographed 05/20/2012 at the Bisti Badlands, New Mexico.
A lot of preparation got into this shot and at the end I got something that looks better than a complete solar eclipse. The remaining solar ring around the moon gives a special touch to the eclipse. It is not the complete absence of the sun, but a remaining ring of fire.

Shiprock is located in the northwest corner of New Mexico. It raises abruptly out of the plains and dominates the surrounding landscape. The monolith is pure basalt and tells us from ancient times when the entire Inner Seaside Ocean raised to form the American continent.
The Navajo people worship it as a sacred place allowing visitors to get close to it but not allow climbing it.
