Hidden in the vastness of Vermilion Cliff Wilderness's uniqueness. It took me uncountable trips to this place to finally have it the way I envisioned it at my very first view of this spot.

Deadvlei, Sossusvlei - During my first visit to Deadvlei in 2013 I used all my battery for night shots. There was nothing left but experiencing sunrise without a functional camera. Reason enough to return to this place 4 years later. This time with enough juice to photograph sunrise and with some additional ideas what to do. Everything was set and ready to go when at the best moment of light an unplanned situation got into my frame. A German female tourist all in white had to share the moment with me. She did it with such an elegance and grace that I allowed her to stay in the frame. I obviously have the very same image taken seconds before 'sans' lady in white. I debated a long time with myself which image deserves the public eye and at the end the lady in white won the contest ;-)

Deadvlei (dead marsh) is part of one the oldest deserts in the world, the Namib-Rand desert in Namibia.
The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area.
The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to have died 600-700 years ago, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry.
