This is the view standing down by the Tiber and looking up to the Ponte Sant’Angelo with St. Peter’s Dom in the background.
The bridge was built originally by the Roman Emperor Hadrian 134 AD. The intention was to give access from the city center to Hadrian’s mausoleum. Latter went through some significant changes over the centuries and is now known as Castel Sant’Angelo.
The statues of the two angels in the foreground are part of the 10 angel statues standing along he Ponte Sant'Angelo. Each angel holds an instrument of the Passion. The facing angel holds the crown of thorns and at the bottom it has the inscription “In aerumna mea dum configitur spina” (The thorn is fastened upon me), while the angel showing its back carries the sudarium.
The Ponte Sant’Angelo was the main access to the St Peter’s Dom until Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II was build in 1911. It served for centuries for pilgrims to cross the Tiber seeking for repentance.

The Ponte Sant’Angelo was the main access to the St Peter’s Dom until 1911. It served for centuries for pilgrims to cross the Tiber seeking for repentance. Hence, quite fitting to have ten angels holding instruments of the Passion and reminding the passing by pilgrims of Christ’s Martyrdom.
This is an early morning shot as in the evening the bridge is PACKED with people making such an image impossible.
