Sossusvlei is famous for its adjacent Deadvlei. Thousands of images are to be seen of this place. At my umpteen visit to Sossusvlei I imposed a restriction on myself. Not to go to Deadvlei! I got out of the car and went the opposite direction with an exercise in mind: abstract and intimate images in the sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

Two windy, cloudy and cold days in my backyard to finally in the last moments of the second afternoon hone into the right setting with the right light. The feeling I got was standing along the Silk Road and watching a heavily loaded caravan pass by.

Contrary to the occasion of my previous post, I decided on this morning to hike up to famous Deadvlei. It was the wildest experience there yet. I am glad not to have missed this. It was certainly a morning not to exchange lenses.

A long 6-mile-hike up a wash in the pitch black darkness of the night, to be at the right spot with crescent moon in my back and the very first dim light of the morning at the horizon. A nice blend of light to bring this elegant and white hoodoo to a shine. Orion is up to the right and watching the moment. A complete silence surrounds me with the exception of distant coyotes yapping in concert.
