The Green River flows (r to l) in a large loop around Turk’s Head, an isolated butte capped by White Rim sandstone, which John Wesley Powell thought resembled a head in a fez when he floated through this area on his first expedition in 1869. Across Stillwater Canyon the buttes and canyon walls in the Maze District of Canyonlands are partially obscured by snow squalls flying in from the northwest.
Taking this photo was both thrilling and terrifying- the drop to the river was a sheer 500 feet/ 150 m, and wind gusts were very strong. As shown in previous posts the edges of the White Rim are usually undercut, and there were some deep cracks in the rock visible on Google Earth.
