What you can’t tell from the photos is just how much Bosco loves to do the hold exercise- he’s just so darn happy that Martin struggles not to laugh. Martin only asks Bosco to do a three to four second hold (calm, no chewing); any longer than that is uncomfortable for Bosco due to his missing lower teeth (ie. drool just pours out of Bosco’s mouth and down the front of his body). We’re really enjoying Shade Whitesel’s approach to teaching a step by step retrieve.

Martin is ready to start generalizing the hold to random household objects (in Shade’s course, you do this before introducing a dumbbell). We poked around the barn yesterday and assembled a collection of things for Bosco to hold: a plastic flashlight, a garden hand trowel, a plastic extension cord holder, a wooden handle from a shovel, and lastly, a 16 oz. hammer. Martin is very excited to get to this stage of Bosco’s training; basically, the entire reason to have a dog in Martin’s opinion is to ask him to hold random things.
